Our 2008 Sacramento Conference, co-sponsored by the City of Sacramento and the University of California-Davis, will highlight a year of increased attention to the Peak Oil energy Challenge, the impending peak, plateau and decline of worldwide oil production. Conference participants will include Matt Simmons (Founder of Simmons & Company, Intl.), Jeff Rubin (Chief Economist, CIBC World Markets), Jim Buckee (former CEO, Talisman Energy), Jeremy Gilbert (Barrelmore, Ltd., formerly BP Chief Petroleum Engineer), Herman Franssen (International Energy Associates), Kjell Aleklett (President, ASPO-International), Randy Udall (Energy Analyst), Jim Puplava (Financial Sense News Hour), David Hughes (Canadian Geological Survey), Dan Reicher (Director, Climate and Energy Initiatives, Google.org), Vince Matthews (Colorado State Geologist), Tom Whipple (Editor of Peak Oil Review and Peak Oil News), Nate Hagens of The Oil Drum, and many others.
The Conference begins on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 21, with afternoon break-out sessions led by national journalists Neil King (WSJ) and Bart Anderson (Energy Bulletin) on “Reporting the Peak Oil Story”, and investment specialists Jim Puplava, Jim Hansen and Atticus Lowe on “Investing in the new Energy Economy”, and other sessions on “Tracking the Public Data”, “Net Export Trends, Megaprojects, and Flows”, and “Scenarios Planning for State and Local Government.” The day will conclude with a Social Reception and special evening presentations.
Two full days of plenary sessions, on Monday, Sept. 22 ("Demand, Meet Supply") and Tuesday, Sept. 23 ("Where Now? Choices for the Long Haul"), will each be followed by Social Receptions and evening presentations.
Day One will be moderated by Sally Odland and Randy Udall of ASPO-USA and Jim Puplava of Financial Sense News Hour. Presentations will include "Petroleum 101", and "Alaskan Oil: Prudoe Bay Discovery and Outlook for North Slope Oil"; a "Peak Oil Global Overview - An American Wakeup Call"; the extent and aging of Global Energy Infrastructure; and the economic impacts of $100 and €70 Crude Oil. Our luncheon presentation will feature Jim Buckee on "Big Oil & Resource Nationalism", and our evening presentation by Professor Al Bartlett will discuss the "Forgotten Fundamentals of the Energy Crisis." (Hint: The words "Exponential" and “growth” will be mentioned.)
Day Two will be moderated by Steve Andrews and Ron Swenson of ASPO-USA. Presentations will address Natural Gas and Coal as Liquid Fuels Substitutes; Fossil Fuel Limits on IPCC Scenarios; and the costs of renewable energy vs. coal. Our luncheon and afternoon sessions will focus on the Future of Aviation and Ground Transportation, Sustainable Mobility, and the Transition of Fuels to Flows as the future shifts towards electricity.
